Stap in die Moreletakloof/Walk in the Moreleta Kloof

Come for a Walk ,early on Sundaymorning the 28th of March (at 6.30).

Please pack a light breakfast, bring a blanket  and your camera, and join us  for a walk in the serene coolness of the morning, under shady trees with the sound of water and the song of birds.

You can choose different routes, or join us for a two- or three hour walk. After all the rains, you will not believe that you are walking in a Reserve in the middle of Moreletapark.

The children can enjoy nature and see Zebra, Blesbuck and Impala grazing in the grass fields.

Park your car at the Rademeyers gate and enjoy the free walk in the most beautiful Reserve in Pretoria.

President Ridge Bird Club birding day on 7 February

Contributed by the President Ridge Bird Club;

Members of the President Ridge Bird Club, under the leadership of Moreleta Kloof veteran Faansie Peacock, enjoyed a tremendous day’s birding in a lush and wet Moreleta Kloof on Sunday 7 February 2010.

The day got off to an early start at 06:30, as the group of eager birders set off with binoculars, cameras, telescopes and notebooks in hand. Within a few meters our shoes were thoroughly soaked with refreshingly crisp dew, but the brilliant birding more than made up for this. Within minutes we bumped into a juvenile Diderick Cuckoo being fed by Southern Masked-Weavers and this parasitic theme continued through the day with sightings of a begging Red-chested Cuckoo and a pair of displaying Brown-backed Honeybirds.

A few warblers played hard to get (as usual!), but the songs of Garden, Marsh, Willow, Little Rush and African Reed Warblers clinched their identity. Perhaps the “best spotting award” of the day goes to the discovery of a roosting European Nightjar, blending in magnificently with a horizontal branch. Those with a quick eye glimpsed a dashing Little Sparrowhawk, and an out-of-place Lanner Falcon. A full house of swallows and swifts were also notable, as were Cape Grassbird, Groundscraper Thrush, Spotted Flycatcher, Arrow-marked Babbler, Levaillant’s Cisticola and a cooperative Black Cuckooshrike.

With 70-odd species on the list, the assembled twitchers enjoyed brunch in the shade – exhausted but saturated with the day’s results – a lucky few even celebrating a lifer or two!

Spring is in the air

SPRING IS IN THE AIR : COME FOR A LOVELY WALK IN THE MORELETAKLOOF ( 5TH AND 6TH SEPTEMBER)

Would you like to join me for a long walk, in the cool of the morning, on romatic paths, among tall trees, next to the Moreletaspruit. Bring your family and friends (children enjoy this very much), your camera and something to drink. The walk takes about two hours, but its your choice because there are shorter, well marked roetes, that you can do on your own. You will see Zebra, Rooibok, Springbuck and ostriches on your walks.

There will also be a Green Market at Rademeyers, with many stalls.

If you have not been in the Kloof, you will be very surprised at the serene cool beauty, that will surround you, right in the middle of Moreleta Park.

My first walk will be at 6.30, on Saturdaymorning (the best walk), which will be followed at ten, and three in the afternoon.

On Sunday, we go out at 7, and ten, followed in the afternoon at three.

Come and enjoy nature, at its very best. Entrance in Helios Street, Moreletapark.

Friends of Moreleta Kloof

We need to get together, to talk about  the Kloof, which is situated right in the middle of Moreleta Park. Have you ever taken a walk in the Kloof, what an unbelievable experience?

We had two serious fires in the last few weeks, started by unknown people, in Rutgers Street.

Nature Conservation and the City Council spend a lot of money and time to keep this Reserve safe and well looked after. They spend hours in the park, to take out all the alien species and do fire-breaks, so that the animals can be safe and well fed. We need to do our part, to be a friend of the Moreleta Kloof and to help them sustain this lovely piece of nature among us.

We did plan to meet on the 30th July, but it did not suit any of the management. Would you like to join us on the 13th August at 17.30, for a meeting at  Rademeyers . Please let me know if you will attend.
