Scorpion walks 8 and 9 April

The Friends of Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve (FMK) will be hosting two more scorpion walks following on the success of the event held on the 4th of March 2011. All who attended will attest that it was an incredibly interesting evening!

Jannes de Villiers will once again be presenting the sessions. His casual, engaging presentation style coupled with his in depth subject knowledge makes for a night out to remember.

If you would like to join us or if you require more info, please contact the FMK on info@moreletakloof.co.za.

We will be hosting two sessions in April, on Friday the 8th and Saturday the 9th. On Friday, we ask that no small children (under 14) attend, as this will be a more technical talk with a walk in the reserve at night using UV lights. The Saturday session will be aimed more at our younger visitors along with mom and dad. It will also include a short walk in the reserve with UV lights.

Please bring along;

  • Clothing fitting the occasion! High heels do not work at all that well when clambering over rocks in the darkness. Wear comfortable shoes and preferably avoid bare legs. You might also consider a jersey.
  • R15 per person donation (you are off course welcome to donate more!)
  • A willingness to view scorpions in a different light, as Jannes will surely change your perception on this surprisingly and somewhat unnervingly abundant arachnid.

Before and after the scorpion walk, you are welcome to have drink or a bite to eat at Rademeyers, which is situated inside the reserve grounds.

  • Location : Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve
  • Date : 8 and 9 April 2011
  • Time : 17:45 for 18:00
  • Cost : R15 per person
  • RSVP on info@moreletakloof.co.za

Sensory trail launch

The Friends of Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve (FMK) is planning on building a sensory trail on existing routes in the reserve, which will be accessible for people with disabilities and will give them the opportunity to get away from an artificially built up environment and out into nature – all while still being in town. We will have the full document available at the launch, on the 17th of February 2011, or you can request it to be e-mailed.

The route will consist of an 2.2 km trail, with a 1.5 meter wide concrete pathway. Some parts of the route will stay natural and we will also make use of existing stretches of tarred roads. There will be a bird hide overlooking the dam as well as two rest points, accessible for persons in wheel chairs. An environmentally friendly, wheelchair accessible toilet will be built on the route. Furthermore there will be a meditation sanctuary among the White Stinkwood Trees along the Rademeyers Spruit.

The Reserve falls under Tshwane Nature Conservation, who currently cannot assist the FMK financially – but are in full support of the initiative. We are looking for possible sponsors, to help us fund this R 1.8 million project, that will benefit many people that could otherwise not visit this reserve, with all the beauty and tranquillity that it has to offer.

The project launch will take place on the 17th of February, 2011 and will be held in the reserve, starting at 16:00. If you are interested in attending the launch please contact us on info@moreletakloof.co.za.

A birdwatcher from Maidstone in the UK writes about the Moreleta Kloof

Moreletakloof is a small private nature reserve to the southeast of Pretoria, South Africa. The reserve claims some wonderful birds with Red-chested Flufftail and Ovambo Sparrowhawk on their list.

The guard on the gate let me in at 06.00 while it was still dark. It was cold too. I had 3 layers, gloves and a hat but found myself wishing I had more….

Clean Up Day 18 September 2010

World Clean Up Week: Clean up of Rademeyer’s stream in Moreleta Kloof, Helios Street, Moreleta Park

We would like to clean the Rademeyer’s stream on the 18th September 2010, in the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve.
We need men and woman who will be willing to walk along the spruit among the bushes, to clear out all garbage from the streets of Moreleta Park, that end up in the Kloof via the stormwater drains. This will take a few hours, of hard work. Gloves and bags will be supplied by Nature Conservation.
You can contact us, so that we can decide what time will suit you best.
