Events in August and September 2014

On 30 August 2014 from 07:00 – 09:30 join us for a walk with Rudie Bezuidenhoudt to talk about the wetlands of Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve.

Cost: R40 per person

This is the first speaker we have that will join us to talk about this important subject. This month we have seen quite a lot of sewerage leaks spilling into the water sources and walkways in our reserve. The talk will about the importance of these meadows in nature.

We meet in the parking lot of the reserve. Please remember to bring something to eat and drink, as well as your camera /binoculars.
 
On the 13th of September we once again everyone that visit our reserve regularly to join for a clean up session of the reserve.

We meet in the reserve parking lot at 07:00, and you can assist for as long or short as you can. We have kids that join us every year, and they enjoy going into the water and bushes to get all the litter out. It ends up being more fun than work!

Please wear clothes you are not afraid of getting a little dirty, and some refreshments for yourself. We provide the bags and will ensure it is removed from the reserve.

On 1 November 2014 from 07:00 until around 09:30 – Bird Ringing with Hein Bantjes and his team of ringers, followed by an interesting talk on bird ringing and photography.

Join us for a interesting morning of bird ringing – see how they catch the bird, weigh and help release the birds again afterwards.

People with disabilities are most welcome to join as the route to the bird hide is easy to navigate and mostly paved.

There is no cost, but  you are welcome to make a donation to the Friends of the Moreletakloof that help with the upkeep of the reserve.

Join us for Bird Ringing on 19 July 2014

Die Vriende van die Moreletakloof Natuur Reservaat bied op die 19de Julie vanaf 08:00 die oggend tot 10.30 die volgende baie interessante uitstappie aan:

Ons gaan vir kinders en ouers alles wys en vertel van wat die ring van voëls behels. Hein Bandjes en sy medewerkers ring gereeld voëls orals oor Pretoria en in ander streke, en weet waaroor dit gaan, en waarom die ring van voëls so belangrik is. Kom geniet die oggend saam met ons onder in die Kloof.

Hierdie uitstappie is ook geskik vir persone met spesiale behoeftes sowel as blinde persone. Al die geriewe waar dit aangebied word is toeganklik vir almal. Ons ontmoet in die parkering van die reservaat by die hek, en sal saam af stap of rol. Bring asseblief iets om te eet en drink in jou rugsak. Julle is welkom om verder deur die Kloof te stap. Friends of Moreletakloof Nature Reserve will present a most interesting talk about the ring of birds on the 19th of July from 08:00 -10.30. Hein Bantjes and some of his fellow bird ringers will show you how they catch the birds, what they look at, how they ring the birds, and many more very interesting facts and reasons why it is so important to get all this information.

We would also like to invite persons who are differently abled and blind persons, to join us as this part of the reserve is accessible. We will meet at the gate in the parking area (please bring something to eat and drink), we will all walk and roll down together. Children and parents are welcome.

Walk & Roll Challenge – 16 June 2014

On the 16th of June we will have a Walk/Roll Challenge for people that are differently abled from 10am.
We will start from the special parking area near the gate of the reserve and then go down into the reserve
on the tarred road, that goes down into the kloof, and from there to the bird hide. If you are fit you are welcome to do the rest of the route on the Rademeyers-, and Maintenance routes down to the dam. Parts of the route is more off-road but with a friend you can go all the way.

When you reach the dam, and on your way back, you will see a concrete bridge , on your left where you can go to the side of the spruit.
We will have two water points, which you will then pass four times. There will be marshals along the way
to give directions and help when needed.

There will also be some Springbuck, Blesbuck, Impala and Zebra to chat to you on the way. The distance is between two or four kilometres, its your choice.
There is no cost involved and you are welcome to come in a group, or with your friends or family. Blind
persons are welcome to join us, as the pathways are mostly even or manageable.

Event reminder: Talk on rock formations by Prof. Adam Brumby

24th May 2014 Prof Adam Brumby from Tuks will walk with us, and give a talk on all the rock formations in the Moreletakloof Reserve. Time is from 07:00 till 11:00.

Adam gives the most interesting talk on the very old rocks (some as old as the rocks from the Cradle of Humankind), that is found here in our reserve.
Remember to bring something to eat and drink, your camera an a hat. The cost will be R 40/person. We will meet in the parking area.

Walk or Roll Challenge

Join us for a ‘Walk or Roll’ challenge on Wednesday 7 May at 10:00.

We would like to invite persons making use of wheel chairs, differently-able as well as blind persons to join us for this challenge. It is your choice what distance you feel comfortable with – either the full distance of 4 km or the shorter distance down to the bird hide and rest deck. At the bird hide you will be welcome to enjoy the view over the spruit, enjoy the quiet, do a spot of bird watching or look out for  Zebra, Blesbuck and Springbuck. We will have marshals along the way as well as water points.

We start from the parking area of the reserve near the gate of the reserve, where there is also special parking available.

Upcoming Events April / May 2014

26th April 2014, at 07:00 and 08:00 (two groups): Big Cut-down of Invader plants in the Moreletakloof Nature Reserve, Helios Street, Moreletapark.

We would like to invite families or groups of friends to join us. Please bring your own cutters, clippers or small saws to cut down Blackwattles and Bugweed on our pathways. We will supply poison to adults to use after the invaders was cut down.
This can be fun and your kids will love working with you in our beautiful reserve. Work as long as you feel like, but remember something to drink and eat,and to wear old clothing and a hat.
We will meet at the parking of the reserve near the entrance.

Join us for a talk on mushrooms

Ons wil julle graag uitnooi na n baie interessante praatjie oor die sampioene van die Moreletakloof Natuur Reservaat op 12 April vanaf 17:30 – 19:30. Liz Popich en haar familie het n baie groot belangstelling in sampioene, en deel hul kennis en fotos van die mooiste sampioene en fungi.

Bring asseblief u eie stoel of kombers om op te sit, asook iets om te eet en drink. Ons ontmoet by die Informasie Hut wat by die hek geleё is reg langs die parkering.

Die koste beloop R40/volwasse persoon en R20/kind onder 12.

Please join us for a very interesting talk on Mushrooms and Fungi on the 12th April 2014 from 17:30 – 19:00. The talk will be presented by Liz Popich who has been taking beautiful pictures and collecting very interesting facts that she will share with us.

Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on as well as something to eat and drink. This is really worthwhile even for young kids. The cost will be R40 for adults and R20  for kids under 12.

Clean-up of our Rademeyers Spruit on 22 March 2014 @ 07:00

Join us for a clean-up of our Rademeyers Spruit that runs through the reserve on the 22nd March 2014, from 07:00 till about 11:00.

We will supply plastic bags and some gloves (if you have, bring gloves please), bring your friends for a fun filled time to clean this spruit of all the rubbish that comes from the storm water drain inlets.

Young kids might not be safe because we may work in the water and on the banks. Please put on old cloths and shoes and remember your hat and something to drink and eat.

We will meet at the parking, just inside the gate of the reserve.

Join us for a Bird Walk on 23 March @ 06:00

Come and enjoy an interesting Bird Walk with Rihann Geyer, on the 23rd March at 06:00, in the Moreleta Kloof Reserve. You will get to enjoy the big variety of birds while you walk among beautiful old Bush Willows and White Stinkwood, along the Rademeyer Spruit. You will also see our brand new Bird hide that is wheelchair friendly! 

  • The cost will be R 40/person, and please remember your binoculars and/ or camera, hat, WATER and something to eat.
  • The walk will take between 4-5 hours.
  • Please meet in the parking at 5:45, near the gate of the reserve.

Rock Formations Walk – Prof. Adam Brumby

You are invited to come and walk with Prof Adam Brumby in the Moreletakloof on the 15th March, from 06:00 till about 11:30 to learn more about the rock formations that we find in our reserve. The cost will be a R40 per person.

We will meet at 5:45 in the parking – just inside the gate of the reserve. Please do remember a hat, your camera, something to eat and drink for the walk.

Please note that people who have difficulty walking on rough terrain will have trouble with this walk as we will venture off road.

Onthou ook asseblief om ñ hoed, u kamera, water en iets om te eet saambring. Persone wat moeilik loop moet asseblief nie deelneem aangesien ons op rowwe terrein sal beweeg.
