Events and News for 2016

Moreletakloof Nature Reserve 2016

8th January, from 06.30 till 10:00. We will do some cutting down of the invader plants like Bug weed. Bring your own clippers or saws and we will supply a safe poison, which can be applied by adults.

We would like to invite you to come and enjoy our first Walks and Talks for 2016 presented here.

Our very first event will be a tree walk with Izak van der Merwe and Owen Brett on the 6th February from 09:00 and we will meet in the parking area. We did this walk in November and we can promise you that it will be excellent because this tree people know so many very interesting stories about every tree … even back in history. We do ask for a R40.00 donation, for the reserve. You are welcome to join them afterwards at Rademeyers. Remember your hat, camera, walking shoes and something to eat and drink.

On the 20th February we will once again have Prof Adam Bumby walking and talking to us about the rocks that we find in this reserve. It is the same age as the rocks at the Cradle of Humankind and this walk will last for at least four hours. Young children also always enjoy this walk. Remember hats, water and something to eat. It is a very popular walk so do not miss out. Once again remember the R40.00 for the upkeep of the reserve. The walk will start at 6.30.

Spider walk with Astri Leroy on the 10th April from 8.30. Young children are welcome to join us because it is presented in a way that will be enjoyed by everybody. Remember your cameras and water and snacks. They do ask a fee of R50/adult and R10/under 11.

We will post more events for the year as we confirm dates!

Please remember that the membership to become a Friend of Moreletakloof have been lowered to R150/family of two adults and two children under 18 (you will also receive free entrance, for two visits for the family to Rietvlei, Groenkloof and Wonderboompoort etc).

Annual Meeting of the Friends of Moreletakloof – 19 November 2015

Annual Meeting of the Friends of Moreletakloof will be held on the 19th of November 2015 from 18:00 at Rademeyers Restaurant (main building), inside Moreletakloof Nature Reserve, Helios Street.

We would like to invite all the people that enjoy the Moreletakloof Reserve and regularly take lovely walks to join us on this special evening. We need people that care to help us with the running of the Friends group, as well as the planning to keep and safe guard this lovely reserve.

It is getting more and more important that the Community gets involved; else these green areas will become more threatened and unsafe and will be developed. Less people have the time or the finances to help us as Friends.

Please come with your ideas of how we can try and keep the reserve safe and well looked after. Nature Conservation will join us and be there to answer any questions you might have. There will be a cash bar available.

You are welcome to write to us at info@moreletakloof.co.za

Clearing of Invader Plants – 24 September 2015

We have 14 students from Unisa that will join us on the 24th September from around 07:00 to cut/saw down the invader plants and trees like Bug weed, Lantana, Black Wattles and many other that we will identify.  Poison will be available to use on the stumps, to stop it from growing again.

If we all work together we can clear a big piece of the reserve and stop this invasion to spread further down into the reserve. This students we do this as part of the projects that they must do while they study. Join us as a group of friends or as a family and bring your own clippers (small or big), saws and if you have a chainsaw (with protective clothing and shoes). Remember something to eat and drink while we all enjoy working together to solve this
problem.

The group from Wildlands (sponsored by the Conservation Trust) have made a big difference along the Rademeyer spruit (32m on both sides), but there are still so many invader plants that needs to be contained and we will appreciate your help.

Please note: We will meet everybody at the corner of Verdi and Rutger Street in Moreletapark behind the guardhouse. We will open the gate into the reserve and work from there, and not the main gate.

You are welcome to make a donation to pay for a worker that have his own chain saw and protective clothing (from our area)

Events in July

17 July, from 13:00 MINI SASS for kids between 7-12 year old (must be accompanied by an adult as it is near water)

Colleen Todd presents this outing and I can promise you that your kids will have the most interesting experience. We take water from different spots in the river and place it in flat white trays, the kids will have the chance to look at all the different small animals and ‘goggas’ in the spruit. They will be supplied with pincers and syringes to study the small animals.

Please remember something to eat and drink and walking shoes. We will finish by 15.30.

We will meet at the information Hut near the gate.

Fun Clean-Up of the Spruit – 15 November 2014

On the 15th of November 2014 we are planning a fun clean-up of the Rademeyerspruit in the Reserve. We start from 06:00, but you can join whenever it suits you!

The rain has come and the spruit is full of street rubbish that was washed in with our first rains. Family groups or friends can join us, but young children might find it it a bit rough (8 years and older).
We did a clean-up a few weeks ago and it was such a pleasure that we stayed in the water for five hours, just enjoying the peace and tranquility. You will be working in the most beautiful part of the reserve.
It will make you feel so good and satisfied that you helped help keep this reserve spotless.
Remember old shoes and clothing, something to eat and drink … and the need to relax in nature.
We will supply bags for the rubbish, you are welcome to bring gloves to use for the pickup.
There will be clear markings on the trees where to go.

For more information: info@moreletakloof.co.za
